Billy's War by Tony Whelpton had me hooked instantly, and young Billy stole my heart...

What can being at war mean to a nine-year-old? Not much, you might think, but if the boy in question is a war orphan...
The date was Thursday 8 May 1941. Britain had been at war with Nazi Germany for 19 months. Billy Frecknall was only nine years old, but what a character he turned out to be! Like many boys of his age, Billy to all intents and purposes no longer had a Dad, because his father had enlisted in the army in the early days of the war, and Billy and his Mum didn’t even know where he was. But that night saw the biggest air raid Billy’s home town of Nottingham had experienced - an air raid which the author experienced personally and recalls vividly - and there were many casualties, including Billy’s Mum. Billy was fortunate to survive, but life as an orphan, especially an orphan being brought up in an apparently hostile family, left a lot to be desired.
What could a little boy in that situation do? Grin and bear it? That would be the only option for many. But what if the little boy in question is resilient, resourceful, intelligent and, above all, driven? Driven by a desire which becomes an obsession, and aided by the innocence of a child of his time, which meant that he trusted everyone until he had reason to think otherwise, he sets off to find his Dad.
In the course of his quest he faces up to many obstacles that would have caused a less resourceful boy to blanch and give up, but he doesn't - and he is blessed also with a charisma that makes most people he encounters take his side without hesitation.
If you read his story, you'll quickly see why Billy captures so many hearts and, with all the odds apparently stacked against him, wins his war.
The sequel to Billy's War, called There's No Pride In Prejudice, was published in 2016, and is also available on !
Why not buy both? It won't break the bank, and you'll be enthralled by both books!

Billy's War is an emotional and courageous book about a young boy who loses his mother during an air raid attack durring WWII. Billy goes through many trials and tribulations starting with a broken leg that happened upon the same air raid that killed his mother. This is a very captivating story that follows Billy through each and every adventure he encounters. I was delighted to see how well Whelpton fleshed out each character. Soon after the loss of his mother, Billy is placed with other family members for a while and during his adventures he makes many lifelong friends and learns alot about himself. Billy War A courageous little boy in wartorn Britain triumphs against the odds edition by Tony Whelpton Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

What a wonderful book. I absolutely loved it. Walking along with little Billy on his crutches was an enlightening experience. Amazingly there are many Billys who went through similar experiences during 'the war'. This book somehow gives you the hope that, they too, found a 'hapilly ever after'. Thank you.
My goodness--this was a phenomenal adventure for a 9 year old boy who was on his own and used his skills to not only survive but thrive. I've never read a story that had me glued to the pages with so much emotion. Fabulous characters-high adventure-great bravery and a marvelous ending. Do your self a favor and read this book.
And I also loved the biography of the author. Two of my favorite friends are of that generation, and lived through the Blitz. They would have been about Billy's age, and they were sent to the country for safety's sake. Billy's story helped me understand what they went through, how it shaped them into the wonderful people they are today.
This is an amazing book for readers young and old! The story of young Billy, whose mum was taken from him in an air raid, and whose dad was away at war, no one knew where. Billy, a spunky nine year old, was sent to live with his aunt, where he was nearly killed by his enraged uncle, and Billy set off to find his dad without much money, and even less idea how to go about it. It's a story of adventure and the best kind of love, that binds people together with hope and trust. I'd recommend this book to anyone from grammar school on up - it's a true gem!
Although I had purchased Billy's War (WWII in England) a while ago, I didn't start reading it until last evening. By this afternoon, I had finished reading the book, and returned to the site to purchase Mr. Whelpton's continuation of Billy's War, There's No Pride In Prejudice. I was more moved by this book than many other better known books about the same topic. It is truly a gem, and one that deserves a wide readership! Again, thank you, Tony Whelpton!
Written in 1988 with a dedication to the 29 residents who died in the author's hometown bomb shelter direct hit by German raiders in 1940, this is a charmingly devised trek story of 9 year old Billy who escapes that tragedy where his mother was one of the victims and eventually, through guile and charm ends up in London. He is taken in by two consecutive women in his quest to find his father whose whereabouts are unknown in the chaos of the opening salvos of WWII when the British War Office takes weeks, even months to locate a single soldier amidst the mess of Dunkirk and rationing and a war footing. You'll love the characters, and the fully detailed visit to early 1940s Britain.
The kind of read that grew on me. Characters took a while taking hold but became charming in time. Really liked the references to British authors of that time period mentioned (Ransome, Williamson), Historic locomotives (Mallard, Flying Scotsman) , music played (On Wings of Song and While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks which I listened to as I typed my review) and British locales like the Lyon's Corner House which when I pulled up the photos on the net only drew me into the story more. Book had no foul language to speak of and a happy ending to boot that added to the appeal as well. An all together pleasant read, and why not grab yourself "Just William" by Richmal Crompton ASIN B004UJDW6Q for free and give it a read as well so as to give yourself a further sense of the mind set of young Billy as he learns to cope with being an orphan in war torn Britain circa 1941. Well done!
