A devout atheist for 50 years describes how when he took an objective look at the question of God realized the errors of his thinking and became a Christian. Wanting to know more of God, he began researching four questions Was God real? What was the nature of God? What does God expect from us? What can we expect from God? The approach is that of a research engineer using logic on information from numerous fields including archeology, history, biology, genetics, evolution, astronomy, science and the Christian Bible. The presentation is non-technical. God left evidence when He interceded in the evolution of the universe. Examination of this evidence provides the basis for the conclusions reached in the book. The philosophy was to follow the evidence, no matter where it led. Much of the approach is out-of-the-box thinking and different from most other books about God. Yet, with this unorthodox approach, the final result is close to that of fundamental Christianity.

Wallace Shaunfield was an engineer by trade. As a non-believer for 50 years, he concerned himself with facts that were provable, and tangible. Anything that couldn't be proven using the scientific method had no place in his belief system. In this book, he explains his belief system, which he says that he really never analyzed in depth.

A series of events that he explains in this book led him to move his family to Boerne, Texas, where he began attending church with his wife. She had been a devout Christian for the 50 years that he had been a non-believer. This series of events was no doubt the prevenient grace of God in operation, loving Shaun with a love that would not let him go, as Pastor Teresa Welborn used to say time and time again in her sermons.

My God Your God? Wallace Shaunfield 9781439268414 Books Reviews

I have known Shaun for a few years. I first met him not long after his wife, Barbara, went to her eternal home. I heard him profess his desire to write a book (this book), and was present with him at a meeting when he announced that the book was complete and in shipping. I love this guy as a Christian brother.
His book will challenge you to think about your belief, or non-belief, and create in you a desire for introspection -- where are you on your spiritual journey, or are you on a journey at all? Chapter 13 is a tough chapter, for me. Shaun's belief that free will (choice) can set you on your own path, apart from God's awareness or interference in your life, is not in sync with my belief. But, his theory1 and various hypotheses challange me to ponder more deeply my belief system, and the degree to which I have surrended myself to God.
This book is well worth a read. It should work well in a study group, where people can dig a little deeper into their own beliefs. It should work equally well to give a non-believer something to ponder, which, to me, is the real purpose of "My God, Your God?" Thank you Shaun!
I consider Shaun as my mentor in my journey as I try to find God's purpose in my life. As a Christian, there have been many issues that have been difficult "to get my arms around". Shaun's methodical approach based on his background of research as an engineer has brought clarification to many of those issues. There are many of these issues that non-believers bring forth to deny the existence of God. I confess that those same issues have lurked in the back of my mind unresloved. "My God, Your God" brought clarification. I highly recommend this book to "Believers" to find answers to their questions as well as the "Non-belevers" to test their denial of the existence of God.
*My God, Your God?* is a powerful and engaging testimony of how a non-believer came to terms with his unbelief and found faith in God. This arduous journey involves pain, yet describes small, but no less impressive, miracles along the way. Since Shaunfield is an engineer, his approach employs the methodology of science, often thought to be anathema to religious belief. But that is exactly where he centers his attack.

Shaunfield takes on the scientific evidence of humankind's presence on Earth for a time far in excess of the 6,000 years or so calculated from the Bible's creation story. To reconcile this apparent contradiction, he distinguishes between "existence" and "consciousness" and finds the emergence of "consciousness" in humankind to be chronologically consistent with the creation story. This is the major, but by no means the only, thorny issue Shaunfield addresses. For example, is it logically consistent to argue that God is omniscient (knows everything, past, present and future), yet permits us humans free will, so that outcomes are determined by our decisions and actions? Without giving away too much of the story, Shaunfield's answer is that God's children are dynamic creatures who grow in knowledge through time and that this is as God intended.

People have been writing about God's nature and His intentions for thousands of years. Shaunfield's book adds to this vast body of literature. *My God, Your God?* does not offer answers to every question or even definitive answers to all the questions it addresses. It does contain answers that may prove useful to those whose faith is impaired or denied by their unbelief.
I recommend this book to college students who have questions about their belief in God. This book helped me to understand the connection between Adam and Eve and the history of Homo sapiens. It is a good book to help answer many questions not answered in other books. It makes you think.
I had a casual acquaintance with Shaun and Barbara before her death. Afterwards, Shaun and I had several conversations about our faith, Christianity, God, etc. We found we shared similar beliefs. I was never an atheist, but I was certainly a non-believer as defined in this book. In fact, I suspect I was a very good example for a target reader for this book.
If so - the goal was accomplished!
I am also an engineer and driven by science, objectivity, and logic. It was very easy for me to follow his methodology. The questions presented at the beginning of the book were very close to my own. He obviously did a huge amount of research, but I believe he did an excellent job of keeping each chapter short and easy to follow while providing ample references for additional reading if desired.
The final chapters on theory1 and the concept of a dynamic God were profound. This concept has allowed me to move past my final personal barrier. I still have a lot of thought and analysis to do to further develop the concept of my God and my relationship with Him, but I am committed to do so. My next step is to share this with my youngest son who is a devout Christian fundamentalist, which should lead to some interesting and rewarding discussions.
Thank you - an excellent work.
